Muay Thai is famous for it's clinch work.
One thing I see a lot of, however, is guys who simply aren't comfortable being "clinched" and working in the clinch (which the Thais call "plumming"). Typically, these are folks from a non-Muay Thai background like American or K-1 style kickboxing or western boxing.
So, in today's video I want you guys to see a very simple, basic drill you can throw into your training to help you become more comfortable in the clinch and learn to gain/maintain a "dominant" position when clinching. I asked my Kru, Harun Raja of Raja Academy of Martial Arts here in Greenville, SC to teach this drills.

ReplyDeleteif you pum and hf you are never going to learn real clinch.
judo dont count at all in clinching .
leg grabbers are not clinching .
ONCE pummeling to all hand positions and escapes are learned you are on the path to becomming clinch monster .....
KARATE TRADITIONALIST WEIGHS IN ON CLINCH:
ReplyDeleteI think everyone agrees this is a great MMA tactic. It's success, IMO, relies on the defender trying to resist the clinch while @ the same time faced with punishing knee strikes.
The instructor in the video presents effective counters. These seem to attack the clinch by counter-clinching, aided by body movement.
The traditional karate perspective is different & the same.
1. DIFFERENT. The karate weakness of the clinch is that the attacker has committed both hands to controlling my head. Secondly, I'm not going to actively resist the clinch, instead I'm going to destroy my opponent.
Should you reach or grab my head, I'm going to do 1 of two things. One, I'm going to use the opportunity to smash you in the head or body which with both your hands tied up you can't stop or defend. Enough force will stun or pain shock you and the physical strength to the clinch will be broken.
2. SAME. Two, I'm going to use a self defense grappling counter-move along the lines as your instructor demonstrates, which also may include a debilitating strike as a component.
The strategic mistake is too try to resist the reinforced strength of the clinch with the neck muscles of the head, & at the same time try to stop or ward off those devastating knee strikes. This is what the vast majority of MMA competitors do, effectively surrendering to the attackers gambit.
SUMMARY:
As a general rule, we karateka don't want to be dancing around in a clinch getting beat on or yanked around by the assailant. We want to be free to smash our opponent quickly & decisively, putting them in enough pain & shock so they are quickly disabled out the the fight.
Should you see competitors in karate uniforms doing something else, they're not practicing traditional karate....
punch versus as into knee -aint gona make it any way a-tall, buddy .
ReplyDeletehow about if i lung step into reaching collar tie into futher deep chin strap -temporary hold - leading i directly into pull throw you down extra hard ..
the concreat -pavement is my friend if you land extra hard on it any part of the body gets a nice bang !!
ouss,, hoorahhh..
if you are not pummeling and hand fighting every workout there is no clinch !
ReplyDeletehand fighting into different positions and grips is all about serious clinch.
body lock - belly 2 belly clinch fighting is for the most skilled only.
who`s got throws from the clinch.
muay thai clinch throws ?
ReplyDeletecan you pummel and hand fight like a greco roman wrestler ?
g-r is much like thai clinch entries... you must accept and beleave this .
there are about five different allowed and used methods of throws from clinch .
1)first group is over hook-- plaaam. single or double collar ties.
2)next is belly 2 belly .upper- mid- lower=back crack position
3)mixed grip . i have called half love vs body lock full love .
4) ***half over collar and other hand on bicept - c-grip-some will call this meat hook-swand grip . cobra grip.!!!
this is the most desirable grip because you can stear or move into elbow and more.
you must learn to pummel and hand fight -TRANSITION OUT OF THESE GRIPS.
slow and light weight pressure -grippings..
if you cant find a partner to practice with lift weights . bumbells and kettle weights- non-stop for five minute sets..
them middel eastern wrestlers use indian clubs and spin them all about the body -over head and around for
strength conditioning.
GRECO clinch aids every thing about muay thai clinch..
lets talk about CLINCH throws .
1 ) there is a knee bump lead in to pull type throw- this is like the one bukow does.
this is for a fast nimble fighter only. learn about push pull hand action for throws.VERY EXPLOSIVE.
2) there is a leveraged throw -fulcrum , where you place your knee aside of the opponets thigh just above the knee
cap and pull them. YOU MAY NEED TO FORCE AND FALL DOWN ON TOP OF THEM-if fulcrum action is
ineffective or failed..
3) twist throw -mostly from body lock .LEG POSITIONING MATTERS .
4) pull down -sit down throw. MOVING FORWARD OR BACKWARD HELPS. backwards is much like a lateral
drop - but has a knee entry ..
5) from double collar tie-plumm twist an arm and stear the apponent step direction to twist quickly and jerk
there head down.
the majority of the time a knee is a predesessor -lead in and PLANTED in the proper place for the next action to
occure.
therefore you must have and use a good round knee and PLACE it next to the opponents thigh and explode into
you next move.
THIS IS JUST STARTERS FOR FULL ON THAI CLINCH THROWS .
JUDO IS NO -NO GOOD FOR MUAY THAI CLINCH THROWS !
I am a little bit confused about Muay Thai, Boxing & Kickboxing. Those are very much similar sports. Muay Thai in Connecticut is also very much similar those two.
ReplyDeletewatch this wrestling related collar bang -entry -control of the neck and back.
ReplyDeleteadditionally will be some good snap down neck control.
both of these techniques are part and parcel to muay thai plam collar tie neck control..
i must stress in thai clinch these moves are used but MODIFIED .
think of holm vs rusey and the moves before the kick to the head and you will see a snap down !
there is much greco roman clinch fighting in muay thai.

the following listed trainers have made some outstanding clinch video lessons and i will list them .
these video lessons are not pure greco stand up only nor strict muay thai. you may want to omit or ignore leg grabbing moves that are included .
the videos are for sale or on youtube .
these lessons are pure gold.
much better than a seminar or trips to thailand to try and get deep clinch information.
knowing and doing the techniques on the video`s will make any coach or fighter a very skilled clinch person .
there is so much to learn and all on video to replay as much as needed.
pummeling into hand fighting and transitions grips and positions. everything any muay thai clinch fighter should be intimate with and execute without thought.

DUKE ROUFUS WEAK CLINCH GOOD ELBOW DEFENSE..
erik paulson EXCELLENT ATTENTION TECHNIQUE AND DETAILS OF CLINCH AND ENTRIES AND TRANSITIONS
greg nelson EXCELLENT ATTENTION TECHNIQUE AND DETAILS OF CLINCH AND ENTRIES AND TRANSITIONS.
muay thai use`s more COLLAR tie fighting-pummeling than greco roman werstling .this not to say pummeling for hooks is not ever used .
ReplyDeletetherefore muay thai clinchers should recognize and make note of this meaningful difference.
muay thai clinch will use a more open grip and transition into close range for collars during hand fighting entires as seen by many fighters in thailand doing so.
do not neglect nor overlook long guard - fighting long range- COLLAR - hand fighting this not to say pummeling for hooks is not ever used moves and transitions.
